Renja Leino b 1958 Kaarina, Finland. Based on the island of Korpo since -90.
After student exams Renja Leino moved to Sweden where she lived for 10 years. She studied psychology, drama and aesthetics at Uppsala University 1980–1984. During these studies she became interested in the work of Ingmar Bergman, especially the psychological light in his films. After an interview with cinematographer Sven Nykvist she ended her studies at the university and started to focus on her own artistic studies. From 1984-86 Leino was assistant to studio photographer Lars Köhler in Uppsala and during these two years she participated in several photography workshops by leading Swedish photographers, like Christer Strömholm, Anders Petersen, Dawid etc. Leino went on to study photography at Konstfack, the University College of Art, Craft and Design in Stockholm from 1986-90. In the last year she studied abroad in Helsinki at TAIK (AALTO) after which she finally moved back to Finland in 1990.
Over the years her work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions both nationally and internationally. Besides photography and video Leino has done experimental installations and site specific work in public spaces. Archipelago nature and wild animals are present in her latest works Birds Pub Vol 1.- Vol.3 (videos and photographs). Currently Leino is focusing on the elements of the sea, water and the change. Next solo show is Darling Sea, at Photographic Centre Peri in Turku, Sep 2018.
”Renja Leino is well respected in the field of Finnish photography, both as an artist and a teacher… Leino has been one of the central figures in the development of the photography course in Turku University of Applied Sciences, Art Academy, which has produced a number of internationally recognized young artists in the recent years. She has also been, amongst others, paving the way in Finland with her innovative use of mobile phone cameras in her practice. (www.contemporaryartarchipelago.fi)
